Design and Deployment of Enterprise Risk Management and Software Solution for Alltech

OVERVIEW

Due to expansion and growth in all its markets, Alltech were looking for an enterprise risk management approach that spanned across, up and down the organisation globally to create and sustain a risk culture.

Prior to beginning their work with Satarla, the consensus at Alltech was that risks were largely threats to the business. Their goal was to shift this perception, so risks are also seen as an opportunity, especially regarding business growth.

THE SOLUTION

Working together, Satarla and Alltech designed and rolled out an updated enterprise risk management framework globally.  A series of workshops across 30 countries helped change the way Alltech’s teams’ thought about risk, by enhancing the identification of threats and opportunities, and the proactive management of them, leading to improved safety and productivity across the business.  The secret to the success of this approach is the workshops were not "typical".  They were interactive and hands-on, increasing participant buy-in.  After the workshops participants leave with practical, easy-to-use tools and techniques that they can, and have, replicated in their respective departments and teams.

“The goal and outcome of these sessions have been that we are facilitating our team’s ability to problem solve. This has helped us to enrich the risk culture within the organisation, while ensuring consistency across the organisation,” said Geoff Parkin (Compliance and Risk Manager at Alltech).

AUTOMATING THE SOLUTION WITH SOFTWARE

Alongside the global program of risk workshops, Alltech decided they would like to automate and improve the efficiency of their enterprise risk and incident management processes with a technology solution, and asked Satarla to support them.

Alltech senior management and the CEO wanted to be able to see a complete overview of the risk and incident management profile across the organisation.  Their existing intake and reporting processes for risks and incidents included manual notes, email and SharePoint.  While an electronic form made it possible for them to notify the team through email, they didn’t have the ability to manage actions; they were unable to manage or track what had happened.

For Alltech, a single system that could capture all their risks and incidents as well as provide the workflow, actions and reporting was essential.  Satarla helped Alltech identify a software solution that met their needs by:

  • Helping Alltech understand what they wanted the software for in terms of use cases and to do feature-wise;

  • Based on those requirements discovering which platforms would meet their needs;

  • Down-selecting to a preferred vendor through a competitive tender exercise;

  • Drafting a business case to gain approval for capital expenditure;

  • Acting as project manager to implement the solution on behalf of Alltech;

  • Training Alltech's employees how to use the platform, specific to their role; and

  • Supporting Alltech after go-live with software support.

“We wanted to make sure that users had a simple interface that allowed them to understand where they should be going and what the next step was. It was also very important for us to have a workflow that ensured that potential issues were escalated and handled according to protocol. [The software]...has helped us shape decision making in the business by providing greater visibility of the risks in the business, so they are managed appropriately to avoid crisis,” said Geoff Parkin (Compliance and Risk Manager, Alltech).
