Ben is a communications specialist and ex-BBC journalist. He has strong writing/editorial skills and in-depth experience in stakeholder engagement, reputation management and digital communications. He was Director of Communications at the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) from May 2005 to August 2014. Previously Ben worked as a communications consultant at the global engineering consultancy Arup and also spent seven years at the BBC where he worked as an online journalist for the Newsnight and Panorama current affairs television programmes.
Hennie is a qualified Mechanical Engineer and is registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineer. He has extensive experience in the railway and mining industries, as well as high-end engineering software. Hennie has used his engineering capabilities in a wide range of fields including: failure analysis, fatality investigations, metal fatigue, pyrolysis in tyres, and data analysis. His expertise is specifically applicable when understanding risk associated with critical machinery and the structural life expectancy of those machines.
Andy is a strategy consultant who has worked with some of the world's leading mining, oil and gas, financial services and healthcare companies. He specialises in helping companies understand how risks created by internal and external dynamics can prevent them from achieving their strategic objectives. Andy recently left the environmental resource management consultancy ERM and founded the consultancy SPM advisors . Prior to this he worked as a strategy analyst in a major bank.
Emer is an expert in Risk and Operations Management. She has experience in a multitude of different industries including: Financial Management & Corporate Governance, Agriculture, Distribution, Manufacturing, Retail, Real Estate, and Public Utility sectors. Emer currently designs Risk and Finance courses for delivery through various professional training bodies and is co-authoring a new publication on Risk Management. Emer works with John at The Finance Expert.
Teresa is an environmental and sustainability professional. Her experience is primarily in the mining sector across a range of commodities including gold, base metals, heavy mineral sands and coal. She has worked on site managing environmental and sustainability issues; in corporate advisory and reporting roles; and on large capital projects. She has been mostly based in southern Africa but has also worked with operations in Chile, Brazil, Venezuela and Ireland. Teresa is an Associate with Satarla and runs her own sustainability consulting company: Uvuna.
As a qualified accountant with an auditing background, Kate has held various finance positions in the Retail and Mining industries with particular focus on improvement of business processes. More recently Kate has worked in Sustainable Development at Anglo American as a project manager on Compliance and Risk Management projects gaining valuable experience in evaluating risks and opportunities on projects. Kate is now an Associate of Satarla.
After completing his PhD at Cambridge University, David worked at De Beers for almost eighteen years in (geo)statistical and microdiamond analyses, amongst other numerate fields of theory and application. While employed by De Beers, he was seconded to the Toronto office, and obtained his CFSG Geostatistical qualification in France. He recently moved to the University of the Witwatersrand as a Senior Lecturer in Statistics.
Meera's experience extends across a number of sectors including health, digital media, online commerce, sustainable development, and public relations. She has spent the past four years working within the extractives industry, focusing on sustainability of the mining and metals sector. Meera has also been involved in the organising and planning of high profile events such as official side events of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
Ollie specialises in helping organisations to improve their decision-making through Enterprise Risk Management. Living close to Vancouver, Canada, he works with clients across North America. His expertise includes designing and rolling out ERM frameworks; identifying and deploying software which automates processes and aides decision-making; and delivering training to all levels of organisations. Prior to being a Satarla Associate, Ollie was the Group Risk Manager at G4S, the world’s largest security services provider, where he navigated the challenges of operating in high-risk environments whilst demonstrating value against cost constraints.
Wendy has extensive experience in risk-based auditing, together with the facilitation of risk assessments. She has spent 25 years in the mining industry, working in Africa, South America, and Australia. Wendy is now adding to her experience in the implementation, management and auditing of ISO 9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 management systems by studying for her National Diploma in Safety Management. Wendy also holds a certificate for the Introduction to Samtrac.
Francesco is a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London specialising in uncertainty quantification. Having worked with companies such as GE, Rolls Royce, and Mitsubishi, his experience in engineering and finance allow him to lead on research into a range of areas such as: the impact of hazardous releases on urban areas; uncertainty quantification models for quantitative finance; race car aerodynamics; and the impact of rare events in aviation. Francesco is co-founder of UQuant.
Zak's expertise lies in running and advising on corporate projects, which he does primarily for mining clients. His work involves setting up project support offices, running secretariats on complex stakeholder based projects, change management within large corporates, and advising clients on project management methodologies. Zak approaches projects with a view to simplicity - focusing on clarification of the significant.
Kate Boothroyd is an expert risk management consultant experienced in project and corporate risk management. Since establishing her own business KB Risk Consulting Limited, she has supported major clients in the public, private and third sectors globally and in many industries, including automotive, construction, civil engineering, education, energy, housing, manufacturing, mining, nuclear, oil and gas, pharmachem, rail and utilities. Kate is an approved trainer for the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), author of the IRM’s Risk Assessment Module for their International Diploma, and a presenter of the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Risk Management Master Class.
Annie is a Learning and Development specialist who has over 12 years experience of designing and delivering training across the charity, public, and private sectors. Prior to founding and running Annie's Training Company, Annie undertook roles including: Head of Learning and Development at the Institute of Fundraising, and Talent Development Manager for the Children's Society. Annie is superb not only when she is training, but when she is working with individuals and teams to build awareness, confidence and personal effectiveness.
Richard has worked for world-class organisations in the finance, government intelligence, petrochemicals, automotive, and FinTech industries. Managing specific or process driven risks has always been at the centre of his work, having fulfilled various senior roles such as Chief Security Officer, Head of Competitive Intelligence, and Chief Risk Officer. He helps clients understand detailed risks by first seeing the big picture and helping them to communicate these findings back to the organisation.
John is an accountant by profession and has spent the past 12 years running and advising businesses in both the private and public sector. Prior to this, John spent 23 years, in various Executive positions, with the RBS group. John is a qualified master-trainer and delivers expert executive Risk Management Training to ISO Standard internationally through The Finance Expert. Industries that he as worked with recently include: Real estate, Energy, Government, Local & Municipal Authorities, Waste & Recycling, Agriculture, Aviation, Hospitality, and Financial Services.
Neil is an associate member of Satarla. He is a qualified occupational health and safety professional and auditor who has worked for over 11 years as an industrial chemist in a range of environments including laboratory, pilot and large scale operations in the UK, Europe, Canada, and Southern Africa. Neil holds a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and a Masters Degree in Chemistry. Neil specialises in hazardous chemical management, OHSAS 18001, and training provision to all levels of organisations.

Tankiso has extensive financial experience in both the private & public sectors. He was Chief Economist responsible for analysis, compilation and dissemination of both South African government financial statistics and the private sector financial statistics. More recently he has been working in the mining sector focusing on Enterprise Risk Management including internal audit, risk management (identification, evaluation and reporting of enterprise, portfolio, strategic & operational risks), Business Continuity Management, insurance, macroeconomic & mining market analysis.
Laura has 15 years of risk management experience both in industry and as a consultant. Prior to this Laura worked as the business risk manager for Anglo American Platinum, Scaw Group Metals, Kumba Iron Ore, with her most recent role being that of Global Head of Sustainability Risk at Anglo American where she played a key role in driving the sustainability agenda. Laura has an MSc in Chemical Engineering and a MBA.
Sarah has spent the majority of her career working in the mining sector. Having started out as an exploration geologist camping in the wilds of northern Quebec, she has since worked in a number of areas including business divestment, safety, sustainability, risk and assurance. She recently left Anglo American to take up the role of Director in Satarla. Based in the UK, she has also spent considerable time in both Brazil and southern Africa. Sarah is also an honorary visiting lecturer at Imperial College London and approved Institute of Risk Management trainer.

Benedikt is a chartered geologist with 7 year's experience in the mining and hydrocarbon industries. He worked for Rio Tinto Exploration in Namibia and Zambia, before founding his own company XPLORE.GLOBAL. Benedikt specialises in mineral exploration geosciences, and is also involved in Operations Support & HSEC. Benedikt currently holds the position of Lecturer in Exploration & Mining Geology at the Camborne School of Mines, UK.
Richard is a statistics expert and co-founder of uncertainty quantification company: UQuant. Having utilised his mathematical and engineering background working with organisations such as NASA, Airbus, and DLR, Richard is now studying for his PhD at Imperial College’s Uncertainty Laboratory.
